"Teal Irises" This tattoo is on a medium-toned person with a yellowish tint-- yet another person who I have met who has been misinformed about how color tattoos work on melanated skin. They were simply told "color doesn't turn out well on black skin." Let's talk briefly on color theory on melanated skin. 1. The color and darkness of your skin plays a role in how color will turn out. And it's an artist's responsibility to inform you to the best of their ability. Be wary of artists who don't understand color theory, because they will either discourage you or misinform you. 2. Skin darkness is like a window "tint". The more tinted the window, the more contrast is required to perceive the tattoo. Black ink, being the most highly contrast-providing ink, is therefore very helpful to create a long-lasting structure for a tattoo. Still, it must be tailored both to the skin darkness and the desired style of the client. 2. Skin color is as straightforward as it looks. Forget undertones and overtones for a moment. If we're to take a swatch of someone's skin color, they are some value of yellowish orange- with a slight lean toward pink/red or blue or olive-- when melanin is added it essentially becomes brown with whatever additional lean. 3. So taking that into consideration, that skin is generally yellowish orange, the opposites are purplish-blue. The contrasting colors get partially canceled out in the skin, turning more gray with more melanin. The remaining colors are what were really working with to apply robust color. 4. My client here has a yellowish lean to their skin tone. Therefore, when applying blue, the yellow will heal over and turn the flowers slightly more green. This is ideal because my client asked for Teal flowers. Also, because they are medium-toned, quite a bit of that color is still very easy to read and it's absurd to me that they were discouraged to use color. 5. Deep-colored skin can still have color. But the artist must know what they are doing. Reds, purples, oranges and greens, with a lot of black structure and a touch of white, can create a very rich and professional tattoo. ... #colortheory #melanatedtattoo #dentontx
